Romania’s Q1 energy production down 2.4 pct, consumption inches up 1.4 pct

Romania’s electricity production was 2.4 percent down in Q1 2024 from the same period in 2023, while household power consumption was 0.1 percent up year-over-year, shows data released on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In the reporting period, primary energy resources decreased 2.4 percent from the year-ago period, and electricity resources increased 1.3 percent.

The main primary energy resources totaled 7.715 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), down by 189,600 toe year-over-year, and domestic production totaled 4.477 million toe, down by 109,200 toe (-2.4 percent).

Romania’s energy imports amounted to 3.237 million tep, down 80,400 tep (-2.4 percent).

Electricity resources totaled 17.651 billion kWh in Q1 2024, by 226.3 million kWh more compared to the period January – March 2023.

The output of conventional thermal power plants was 5.328 billion kWh, by 105 million kWh more (+2 percent) than the figure recorded at the end of March 2023.

The hydropower output was 4.423 billion kWh, down 6.5 percent year-over-year, while the NPP output was three billion kWh, up by 1.5 million kWh (+0.1 percent).

The output of wind power plants between January 1 and March 31, 2024 was 2.14 billion kWh, down by 300.4 million kWh year-over-year, while the production of solar photovoltaic plants stood at 475.6 million kWh, by 129.2 million kWh more.

The final electricity consumption in this period was 12.897 billion kWh, by 1.1 percent higher, and the final consumption of electricity in the economy increased 1.4 percent. Public lighting consumption saw a jump of 10.5 percent, while household consumption inched up 0.1 percent.

Romania’s electricity export in Q1 stood at 3.240 billion kWh, by 125.5 million kWh more compared to the same period in 2023

The own technological consumption in networks and transformer stations was of 1.514 billion kWh, down by 44 million kWh compared to the year-ago period.
