Senate president Nicolae Ciuca condemns the assassination attempt on Slovakia’s prime minister Robert Fico, stating that these acts of violence have no place in a democracy.

„I strongly condemn the assassination attempt on Slovakia’s prime minister Robert Fico. These acts of violence have no place in a democracy. We are waiting for more details about the incident and we trust that the authorities will carry out a thorough investigation,” Ciuca said on the X platform.

Slovakia’s social democrat prime minister Robert Fico has been shot earlier today, after a government meeting held outside the Capital City Bratislava, in the city of Handlova, report news agencies Reuters and TASR.

According to a reporter of Slovakia’s TASR news agency, several shots have been fired at the scene of the attack, and the perpetrator has been arrested. The area in front of the House of Culture in Handlova, where the government meeting took place, has been evacuated.
