Gov’t seeking orderly energy transition, competitive economy

Published on

The government wants Romania to have an orderly energy transition, and at the same time increase the competitiveness of the economy, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Friday in a message sent to the high-level conference „The transition path of the Romanian chemical industry to green economy” organized at the Victoria Palace of Government by the Prime Minister’s Chancellery.

„In order to decarbonize the industry, we are preparing to implement the Green Deal Industrial Plan and the EU’s recently adopted Net-Zero Industry Act Regulation, but for this we need mature projects and we also need green financing,” Marcel Ciolacu said in his message.

The industry’s GDP share is approximately 23 percent, without major fluctuations, and the chemical industry plays a central role for many economic sectors, having a transversal character, said Ciolacu.

The head of the Executive emphasized that the Romanian industry is part of the European industrial family and contributes to the EU’s competitiveness through the 14 strategic industrial ecosystems.

The prime minister also mentioned the consultations initiated in 2023 with the economic operators in the „oil and gas, heavy industry and transport sectors”, stating that this year consultations will continue with „the area of agriculture and buildings’ energy efficiency.”

At the beginning of the conference, Economy Minister Radu Oprea and president of the Romanian Chemical Companies Association – ROMCHIMICA Stefan Vuza signed a letter of intent regarding cooperation for the energy and climate transition of the Romanian chemical industry, a document negotiated between the government and the operators in the field.
