Planned 10 pct pay rise for public sector employees only deepens system’s inequities (union)

The ordinance providing for a 10 percent pay rise for public sector employees only deepens the inequities in the system even more, as employees collecting RON 2,300 in income will get a pay increase of just RON 230, whereas those with wages of RON 8,000 – 9,000 will receive an additional RON 800 – 900, president of the National Federation of Administration Trade Unions (FNSA) Bogdan Schiop declared on Thursday.

„FNSA is organizing on Thursday, starting at 11:00 a.m., a protest at the seat of the government of Romania, demanding mainly for the government to establish clear policies aimed at eliminating wage discrimination in the public administration sector. Also, our long-time request has been that a method be identified to balance and bring a little higher the wages at the bottom of the pay scale,” said Bogdan Schiop.

He mentioned that another demand of the protesters is for a real social dialogue, because this ordinance was put up for consultation in one day, the next day the meeting of the Economic and Social Council was urgently called, and the piece of legislation was adopted in the afternoon of the same day. „This is anything but consultation, and has no shred of transparency,” the union leader said.
