Almost 19,000 polling stations set up for June 9 local elections in Romania

Romanians are expected at the polls on Sunday to elect their representatives in the local administrations, with almost 19,000 polling stations having been set up throughout the country.

Thus, the general mayor of Bucharest, county council chairs, members of the General Council of Bucharest, of the county councils, mayors, the Bucharest district mayors as well as the members of the local councils of each administrative-territorial unit will be elected for the next four years.

Romanian citizens who are 18 years of age or turns 18 by the day of the elections, with a domicile or residence in the country, have the right to elect the local public administration officials.

Barred from voting are mentally disabled and criminal offenders whose rights to vote has been rescinded by court decision.

In the local elections, voters cast their ballots at the polling stations where they are assigned by reason of domicile or residence, if that is established at least 60 days before the date of elections.

You can vote with a valid photo identity document issued by the Romanian state.

Passports can be used at local offices only by Romanian citizens residing abroad who exercise their right to vote in the country.

Voters residing abroad who established their residence in the country as of April 11, 2024, cannot vote in this year’s local elections.

Voting begins on Sunday at 07:00hrs EEST and ends at 22:00hrs.

Given that both European Parliament and local elections are held on June 9, voters can choose to exercise their right to vote only in one or in both elections.

Over 18,900,000 Romanian citizens are expected to vote in the local elections on Sunday.

As many as 207,389 candidacies were registered for the elections.
