President Iohannis: It was a good decision to merge local and EP elections

Published on

President Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday told a press conference that „it was a good decision” to merge the local election and the election to the European Parliament.

The head of state said this in the context of his participation in the B9 Summit, in Riga.

„It was a good decision to merge the local election and the election to the European Parliament,” the head of state said, while explaining that „the fact that these two elections were merged resulted in a voter turnout of almost 50 per cent.”

He also said that, although there were „a few incidents” recorded, the elections went „smooth.”

The president said that the results „speak for themselves.”

„There was much debate in the public space on the topic of this government coalition, on whether it is good for Romania or bad, and this time the answer came directly from the voters who, in a big proportion, almost 50 per cent, voted for the joint list of this coalition. And this is the fair thing to do, because this coalition did govern well and Romania managed to go through all the recent crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine without much damage due to it,” showed Iohannis.

Iohannis showed that this was „the fair step to make, and the communities elected their presidents of councils, councillors they thought would be good for the next four years.”

When asked if this alliance could be maintained for the next elections, the presidential ones, and the parliamentary ones, respectively, Klaus Iohannis said this is „a matter that needs to be clarified inside the coalition.”

„Even if I would have an opinion on this matter, I don’t think it would be suitable to say it publicly,” said the president.
