President Klaus Iohannis on Tuesday commented on the result of the election to the European Parliament and the new political configuration that has emerged from it in the EU, by saying that, despite some small movement, there is no major change brought by this election, as the centrist continue to represent the majority in the European Parliament.

„People talked very much about how the different political families are going to be represented. In fact, I don’t think that we can speak of a major change. There are some small movements that we can notice, such as, for instance, we can see that the European People’s Party, which remains the most significant political entity in the EP, has now a larger number of MEPs, while other entities lost some MEPs, but, basically, the centrist parties continue to represent the majority in the EP. We can also notice, of course, that are differences between countries, with France, for instance, facing significant changes right now, but the European Parliament as a whole is facing no major changes,” Iohannis said after the B9 Summit in Riga.

He also said that the European Parliament remains „a constructive institution.”

„There are changes that will influence the manner in which votes will be cast, and these will influence the lobby in Parliament for some parts of the legislation, but I am certain that the Union will continue on its path and the European Parliament will continue to be a partner and a constructive institution,” added the president.
