Balance of non-government loans, up 0.5 pct in May 2024 (BNR)

The balance of non-government loans granted by credit institutions increased in by 0.5% May 2024 compared to April 2024 (0.6% in real terms), up to RON 393.510 billion, according to a press release of the National Bank of Romania (BNR).

RON-denominated loans, with a share of 68.8% in the total volume of non-government loans, increased by 0.6%, whereas the foreign currency-denominated loans, when expressed in RON, with a share of 31.2% in total non-government loans, increased by 0.2% (similar evolution in the case of the indicator expressed in euro).

Compared to the same period in 2023, non-government loans increased by 5.7% (0.5% in real terms), due to a 7.6% increase in RON-denominated loans (2.4% in real terms) and a 1.6% increase in the foreign currency-denominated loans expressed in RON (when expressed in EUR, the foreign currency-denominated loans went up 1.4).

The balance of government credit granted by credit institutions decreased by 4.9% in May 2024 in comparison with April 2024, to RON 214.667 billion. Compared to May 2023, it increased by 16.4% (10.8% in real terms).

The broad money supply (M3) recorded a balance of RON 690.193 billion at the end of May 2024. It increased by 0.2% (0.3% in real terms) compared with April 2024, and by 10.5% (5.1% in real terms) compared with May 2023.
