Iohannis: National Flag – unifying element for Romanians, wherever they are

In a message issued on National Flag Day, President Klaus Iohannis referenced Romania’s NATO, EU and UN membership and emphasized the need for unity.

„Today, the national flag flies alongside the flags of our allies and partners, with whom we share common values and ideals in international missions carried out under the auspices of NATO, the EU or the UN. National Flag Day is a good opportunity to reaffirm the fundamental values of our nation and to act together to reinforce our cohesion and fulfill our great national aspirations,” the head of the state said, according to the Presidential Administration.

He went on to point out that the national flag „represents a unifying element for Romanians, wherever they are.”

„The tricolor is there in watershed moments or moments of joy, at national and international events, in institutions, at parades or at sports competitions,” the president pointed out.

Klaus Iohannis also recalled the history of this celebration and paid tribute to the Romanian soldiers killed in theaters of operations.

„We honor the national flag as a symbol of the high national values it stands for and, at the same time, we remember with gratitude all our forerunners who served and sacrificed themselves in defending them – from the 1848 revolutionaries to the current veterans of the armed forces, who have recently participated in international theaters of operations,” he stated.

The president also mentioned that National Flag Day celebrates one of the most important symbols of the Romanian nation.

„Starting from 1848, the tricolor marked the significant historical events that led to the creation of the Romanian independent, unitary and democratic national state. The colors of the flag enlivened generation after generation in the battle for the accomplishment of the grand national ideals – ensuring independence, the triumph of freedom, the establishment of democracy and rule of law, and Romania’s NATO and EU integration,” emphasized Klaus Iohannis.

On the evening of National Flag Day, the Cotroceni Presidential Palace will be lit in the colors of the Romanian tricolor flag.
