The Save Romania Union’s (USR) extraordinary congress elected on Saturday Chairwoman Elena Lasconi as the party’s contender for this year’s presidential race.
Lasconi garnered 531 votes (94.31%), while her opponents Octavian Berceanu and Dumitru Stanca received 25 (4.44%), and 7 votes (1.24%), respectively.
52-year-old Elena Lasconi is a trained economist and has a 25-year career in television. Since 2020 she has been serving as mayor of the Campulung Muscel municipality, a position in which she was re-elected in 2024.
„It’s an incredibly hard road, but I have chosen the hard path all my life, and this has brought me the greatest satisfaction. I think it’s good, because I chose this road out of a positive feeling, that of love. I love Romania with all my being and I think you do too, and that’s the reason why you are here,” Lasconi said.
The USR leader called on the right-wing political formations to get behind USR’s presidential project.
„It is a very important moment. I’ve said it since June 10, I think, ever since I saw that red-colored map, that 2024 is the year when we can either bury democracy in Romania or save it. I am sure that each of you, every good-faith Romanian wants this. And thinking of good faith, I am calling on all right-wing political formations to come and support the USR’s presidential project. I say this because in my opinion, the right-wing is the only solution to prosperity for Romania,” Elena Lasconi added.
USR’s electoral commission will continue its activity, counting the votes for the composition of the party’s National Bureau.
