The European security architecture must be adapted to the new international context, and the Republic of Moldova must benefit from the support of all OSCE states, because there is international support for democratic values, the president of the Romanian Parliament Delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA), Dan Barna said on Wednesday.

He participated in the 31st Annual Session of the OSCE PA, which took place from June 29 to July 3 in Bucharest, where more than 200 parliamentarians were present from over 50 countries.

„One of the topics addressed these days concerns us and is very close to us: it is about the Republic of Moldova. The debates within the works of the Session emphasized the need for the Republic of Moldova to benefit from the support of all the states in the OSCE precisely because this European direction which the current government in Chisinau manages to maintain is under extraordinary pressure from Russia. A separate resolution was also adopted regarding the situation of human rights in Transdniestria and the need for the OSCE structures to continue monitoring the area. The role of these documents – the Bucharest Declaration, the distinct resolutions on certain regions (…) is to give arguments in the internal debate in Moldova and in all this political debate in which Russia invests huge sums, that there is international support for democratic values”, Barna told a press conference.

Barna emphasized that the Bucharest Declaration was adopted, which he appreciated as „balanced” and 16 distinct resolutions „on current and important topics”.

„This conclusion related to the European security architecture must be adapted to the new international context, a context in which we have an active war in Ukraine, this security architecture can only function on the Helsinki Final Act and the international documents that talk about democracy, freedom and the functioning of the states in this context. (…) The session was really up to the standard of an international event. I hope and trust that the Romanian delegation will have an important role. (…)The OSCE is becoming more and more connected to current issues. We are not only talking about polar bears, we are also talking about the dramatic situation in the Middle East, what is happening in Transdniestria, between Armenia and Azerbaijan and how to find the path of peace there, really topical issues and ultimately this is the role of an organization like the OSCE,” added Barna.

He congratulated the president of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Pia Kauma, who was elected to this position, in the APCE Session in Bucharest, for a new mandate.

„He managed to be the president that the organization needs. He managed to keep the organization not afloat, but to make it relevant, active and visible. Or in this context, where we are looking for the way to relevance and to find a mechanism towards which the voices of the state will count again, the efforts made by the OSCE are remarkable”, Barna pointed out.

Pia Kauma mentioned that among the topics addressed in Bucharest are the Russian invasion of Ukraine, climate change, artificial intelligence, lack of water, especially in Central Asia, the fight against anti-Semitism in the OECD area, corruption, migration, human trafficking and civil society.
