As many as 3.8 million pensions to increase after recalculation by almost 27pct on average

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Wednesday said that the decisions to recalculate state pensions will be mailed to all pensioners on Friday, according to the plan, mentioning that 3.8 million state pensions are increasing by 27% on average.

„We start with the subject awaited by millions of Romanians: the recalculation of state pensions, which is one of the great priorities of this government. Together with the Ministry of Labor and the president of the National House of Public Pensions, we make sure today that everything is on schedule and the recalculation decisions leave on Friday for all pensioners, according to the plan. Centralised data show that 3.8 million pensions increase after the recalculation, which is over 82% of the total state pensions in Romania, with the average increase standing at almost 27%,” Ciolacu said on Wednesday, at the beginning of a government meeting.

Labour Minister Simona Bucura Oprescu said that most pensioners will win and no one loses.

„We have completed the recalculation. There will no longer be pensioners who worked the same, but have different pensions. The Ciolacu government ensures the sustainable and continuous growth of pensions. The law introduced a mechanism that guarantees the annual increase of pensions without creating budgetary imbalances. We have eliminated the threshold of 9.4% of GDP for pension outlays that could have led freezing pensions until 2070,” said Oprescu.

The minister added that this year pensioners have got two increases.

„In 2024, most pensioners have got two increases: the first increase on January 1, 2024. All pensions increased as a result of the increase in the pension computation point by 13.8% from RON 1,785 to RON 2,032. The second increase on September 1, 2024 to eliminate inequities by recalculating all pensions. Most of them will win, no one loses,” the minister said.
