Alliance for Romanians’ Union (AUR) Chairman George Simion says Romania must ensure that its next European commissioner „will be a true patriot, a professional who will put the interests of the country above all else,” and in his opinion Victor Negrescu „does not fit this profile.”
„We need to appoint a commissioner who will fight for Romania (…) We need a European commissioner who is more than just a Brussels functionary, a Romanian who will fight for our country with devotion and courage. (…) Romania has the same rights as any other nation in the European Union, and our voice must be heard and respected. (…) I believe that Victor Negrescu, the PSD [Social Democratic Party] proposal, is not a solution for this post and both I and my AUR colleagues firmly reject it,” said Simion, according to a press release on Thursday.
According to the AUR leader, the post of European commissioner „is not a political trophy” and this way of looking at this position „must come to an end.”
„Until now, the appointment of Romania’s European commissioners has often been the result of internal political calculations, dictated by the interests of PSD and PNL [the National Liberal Party]. This way of looking at the post of European commissioner must come to an end. The post of commissioner is not a political trophy, but Romania’s voice among the great European nations,” added George Simion.
