For the history of Romania, August 23, 1944 represents the country’s geopolitical reorientation and the shortening of the Second World War by six months, Senate President, Liberal leader Nicolae Ciuca, said on Friday in a Facebook message.
„For our history, August 23, 1944 represents Romania’s geopolitical reorientation and the shortening of WWII by six months. Given the sensitive situation of our army and of our German ally at that time, the Soviet plan to break the frontline in the area of Moldova would have taken Romania out of the war through its occupation by the USSR. Thus, the turn of weapons was a necessity for saving the country. The daring act of King Mihai and the significance of the day of August 23, 1944 have been falsified for too long by the communist regime,” Ciuca said.
According to the Chairman of the National Liberal Party, August 23 also marks the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of All Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes, as well as the National Remembrance Day for the Victims of Fascism and Communism.
„We remember the atrocities committed by the criminal regimes that crushed the people’s rights and freedoms, leaving behind millions of innocent victims and tens of millions of broken destinies. The tragedy of the peoples of this part of Europe began on August 23, 1939, when the continent was divided through the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact into the spheres of influence of two dictatorial powers. The mentality of drawing lines across the map of other countries is still visible to our east. Western support for the invaded Ukraine is the categorical rejection of this tyrannical way of approaching relations with neighboring states,” Ciuca pointed out.
He also highlighted the importance of Romania’s NATO membership, which provides it „with the strongest security guarantees” it has ever had.
„Our people has always fought for the freedom to choose its own destiny. Unlike August 23, 1939 and August 23, 1944, now we are no longer vulnerable to the imperialist ambitions of dictators. As members of NATO – the strongest defensive military alliance in history – we enjoy the strongest security guarantees we’ve ever had,” the Liberal leader pointed out.
