The Social Democratic Party (PSD) is ready to take on a new political project for Romania and to propose a new model of president to Romanians, party’s leader Marcel Ciolacu announced.
„PSD won the local and parliamentary elections. Dear colleagues, today we are rejoicing and making plans for the future, but we must never forget where we started from. Four years ago, when you elected me chairman, our party was going through its hardest times (…) I chose the hard path of struggle. Together, we have managed to regain people’s trust. Together, we took a hopeless party, reformed it and brought it into government. This is the truth and we must be proud of it! We must continue. Romania is changing and PSD has the obligation and must change with Romania. That is why, dear branch leaders, in the parliamentary elections in the fall, we must have 30% women candidates on eligible seats. PSD must be the first party in Romania in terms of party reform,” said Marcel Ciolacu, at the PSD Congress on Saturday.
He stressed that the PSD is ready to take a new step forward and announced that he will run for the presidency and at the same time „will win” the presidential elections.
„We have fundamentally changed this party. We have regained our pro-European path. We have regained the respect of European leaders. We have reconnected with the civil society. We have again become dialog partners with trade unions and business the environment. I want to thank all the social partners who are with us today. We did this because respect and trust are essential. That is why today, like all strong nations, we are undertaking a presidential project of national renewal. I have consulted each one of you. I have consulted with the common people. I have consulted with my family, but also with my spiritual father. It is time to step forward and say with all confidence: Yes, I will run for and win the presidency of Romania! Yes, after 20 years, Romania deserves a president for everyone!,” said the PSD leader.
According to him, „the hatred induced in society for 20 years must disappear” and „young people must see that it is worth fighting for something, not against someone.”
The PSD leader added that Romania needs a president who will do state politics, not party politics.
„We need to move beyond the era in which everyone worked for the well-being of one man. And the presidential cloak should no longer be thrown on people’s backs. I wish that, after 20 years, we will have a president who will work side by side with the people for their well-being, to restore hope and people’s trust in the common good,” the Social Democrat leader said.
