PM Ciolacu to discuss European commissioner position with EC president

Published on

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said that on Monday he will have a discussion with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Romania’s representative to the EU executive, but for the time being it is not known which portfolio Romania will hold.

„Today I will have a discussion with the president of the Commission, then I will have a discussion with Mr. Nicolae Ciuca, if necessary with the president of Romania. You know very well that the Commission has not been set up with areas of authority and we wanted to find the best person for certain areas. At this moment my personal proposal is Mr. Victor Negrescu,” said Ciolacu, at the PSD headquarters, when asked if he will propose to Brussels on Monday the name of the person who will hold the portfolio of European commissioner on behalf of Romania.

He mentioned that „nobody knows” when Romania’s portfolio will be decided.

„I would like us to be the first country in the European Union to find out the portfolio, but I think that the president is having discussions with all the prime ministers of the European Union at the moment,” the PSD leader explained.

Ciolacu said that, so far, he has had unofficial talks with Nicolae Ciuca and Klaus Iohannis only „on the portfolio” of European commissioner.
