Public administration debt (government debt) rose to 862.344 billion RON in May 2024 from 852.816 billion RON in the previous month, according to data published by the Finance Ministry (MF).

As a percentage of the GDP, government debt increased to 52.6%, from 52.1% in April (GDP as reported by the National Institute of Statistics on July 8, 2024).

In the fifth month of the year, medium- and long-term debt increased to 810.612 billion RON, from 787.02 billion RON in April, while short-term debt fell to 51.73 billion RON, from 65.796 billion RON in the previous month.

Most of this debt, 718.265 billion RON, was represented by government securities. Loans amounted to 129.142 billion RON.

Debt in national currency amounted to 405.322 billion RON, that in euro to 371.29 billion RON equivalent, and debt in US dollars to 84.567 billion RON equivalent.

Also, central government debt had reached 840.798 billion RON in May 2024, up from 831.166 billion RON in April, of which 789.1 billion RON medium and long-term. Most of the central government debt was contracted in lei (388.25 billion RON) and in euro (366.817 billion RON equivalent).

Local public administration debt decreased to 21.54 billion RON, from 21.65 billion RON in the previous month, of which 21.512 billion RON in the medium and long term.

At the same time, the general government domestic debt in May 2024 amounted to 416.386 billion RON (25.4% of GDP), of which 399.486 billion RON was central government debt and 16.899 billion RON local government debt.

According to MF data, the external debt of the public administration amounted to 445.958 billion RON (27.2% of GDP), of which 441.311 billion RON was the external debt of the central public administration and 4.647 billion RON the external debt of the local public administration.
