Gov’t coalition decides to leave to Parliament adoption of bill raising tax-free pension threshold

Published on

The governing coalition decided at its meeting on Thursday to leave to Parliament the adoption of the bill initiated by Liberal Raluca Turcan, which raises the tax-free pension threshold from RON 2,000 to RON 3,000, political sources said.

Also, the coalition agreed on the adoption by Emergency Ordinance of a package of measures providing, among others, the updating of the benefit caps, as a result of the pension increase for a large majority of retirees.

According to the cited sources, talks are underway to update the RON 250 meal vouchers paid once every 2 months to 2.4 million beneficiaries.

Speaking of the increase of the pension tax threshold, National Liberal Party deputy chair Raluca Turcan said on Thursday that „the fairest method” would be a „fast” vote in the Chamber of Deputies on the bill promoted by the Liberals in 2022 and which has the backing of all lawmakers, having already been adopted by the Senate.

In Turcan’s opinion, the government’s intention to raise the pension tax threshold through an emergency ordinance would „usher in an unconstitutionality issue”, rendering „vulnerable” a highly important measure.
