Romania’s future is not guaranteed, direction of our nation to depend on what we choose, says Mircea Geoana

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana believes that Romania is „at a turning point in its national history” and that the nation’s direction depends on the outcome of the December elections.

Present in Suceava at the launch of the book „Battle for Romania’s future. Thoughts of a Romanian at the top of NATO”, that he authored, Geoana said that „Romania’s future is not guaranteed” and that our country has several „possible futures”.

„What I am trying to tell you is that Romania’s future is not guaranteed either. There are several possible futures both at the present moment and in an international context that is changing extremely tumultuously, not only geopolitically, but also technologically, but at the level of ideas, at the level of society. (…) Today we are facing a battle for the future of Romania. The direction of our nation for the coming years and decades will depend on what we choose (…) This is not an ordinary year, it is not an ordinary period. It is one of those periods… in which you will reap what you sow,” Geoana said.

The NATO official added that Romania has the chance to no longer be the eastern border of Europe, but the „heart of Europe”, not only geographically, but also politically, economically and strategically.

„For us, in Romania, we have, for the first time in many centuries, the chance to stop being the Eastern border of the West, but by bringing Ukraine, Moldova, hopefully also Georgia and the Balkans, to stop being practically at the geographical periphery of Europe, to be in the center and heart of Europe geographically, politically, economically, strategically and in terms of respect for the Romanian nation in Europe and the world,” Mircea Geoana added.

He recalled the model of political organization in Romania, saying that „the political system has lagged behind the Romanian society” and that „the hyperpoliticization of the Romanian state creates severe dysfunctions within the state”.
