Romania records 47 outbreaks of small ruminant morbillivirus [peste des petits ruminants – PPR], by 17 fewer than at the end of August, when 64 were confirmed at the national level, the National Veterinary and Sanitary Authority for Food Safety (ANSVSA) announced on Monday.

Thus, out of the 17 extinguished outbreaks, 10 were in Tulcea County, 6 in Constanta County and one outbreak in Ialomita County.

The institution mentions that, starting from September 6, 2024, the joint order of ANSVSA, Agriculture and Interior Ministries entered into force, which provides for a period of 30 days, several measures: all small ruminants that enter Romania’s territory are placed in quarantine and, additionally, they are tested serologically and virologically individually, to determine the small ruminant plague morbillivirus; all movements of small ruminants on the territory of Romania are suspended.

According to the cited source, the counties on the border with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova will identify and implement additional measures, adapted with the aim of preventing the entry into Romania of live animals and/or products, by-products, materials, goods, which can be considered vectors of infectious diseases.

ANSVSA calls for the support of farmers in the sheep and goat sector to comply with all the measures ordered by the authorities to prevent the spread of this disease on the territory of the country.

„Any suspicion of disease must be notified as soon as possible to the county DSVSA”, say the representatives of the veterinary authority.

PPR is a serious viral disease that does not affect humans, but affects small ruminants, namely sheep and goats. Mortality in the case of infected animals can reach 70%.
