PSD’s Ciolacu says if he wins president mandate, PM must be from different party

Published on

Prime Minister and Social Democratic Party (PSD) Chairman Marcel Ciolacu, in an interview with Antena 3 private television broadcaster on Tuesday, said that if he wins the presidential elections, he would like power to be shared in Romania and the next prime minister to come from a different party, even if the Social Democrats win the parliamentary elections.

He said he wishes all to be involved in a project for Romania, focused on foreign relations, national defence and economic priorities.

„Each one of us (…) let’s all put at the table our knowledge, our relations, our specialists, because Romania’s most important people are coming. I, Marcel Ciolacu, if I win, will certainly not take all the power, power must be shared, especially in the current context. I told my party colleagues not to get upset. Even if PSD gets to be the first party, it won’t have 50%, a new coalition will have to be formed. The prime minister must be from a different party, in order to create the balance and the premises for such a challenge that I wish for,” Ciolacu said.

He pointed out that Romania needs „a cohabitation and a stable government” for the coming period, as it cannot afford political crises.

Ciolacu argued that the approach taken by those who have held Romania’s president office in the last 20 years had been totally wrong, provoking „hatred and division.”

„The president must be on the field, he must be a referee, a fair referee, a referee in solidarity with the injured party. Reforms don’t just bring applause. I want to be a president who is next to the prime minister. I want to go with the prime minister hand in hand to the president of the Commission to negotiate for Romania,” said Marcel Ciolacu.

The prime minister also criticised the arrogance in the public system, in city halls and central institutions.

„If we don’t understand that we are at the service of Romanians when we go to work, whether you are in central or local government, we will not heal,” Ciolacu said.
