Net foreign direct investments (FDI) to Romania fell in 2023 to EUR 6.75 billion from EUR 10 billion in the previous year, shows data released on Monday by the National Bank of Romania (BNR).

„The net FDI in 2023 amounted to EUR 6,748 million, of which: EUR 6,996 million in equity participations (resulting from adding up the paid-up capital in amount of EUR 2,070 million with the reinvested earnings in FDI enterprises in the amount of EUR 4,927 million); – EUR 248 million in debt transactions with direct foreign investors and non-resident group companies, calculated as the debt (EUR 1,096 million) less claims (EUR 1,344 million) difference,” reads the central bank release.

2023 FDI incomes by non-residents stood at EUR 11.865 billion, of which earnings on equity of EUR 10.764 billion (determined as the difference between the EUR 14.354 billion after-tax profits attributable to foreign investors less their share in loss, in amount of EUR 3.590 billion, from the total losses recorded by FDI enterprises in 2023), states the cited source.

Also, the net income from interest was EUR 1.101 billion, calculated as the difference between the interest received by direct foreign investors for loans to enterprises owned in Romania and the interest paid by them for borrowing from these enterprises, both directly and via other non-resident fellow companies.

The FDI balance as of December 31, 2023 stood at EUR 118.231 billion, of which EUR 84.76 billion in equity, including reinvested earnings (71.7 percent of the total FDI balance) and EUR 33.47 billion – debt instruments in relation with direct foreign investors and non-resident fellow companies (28.3 percent).
