U.S. Embassy launches disinformation awareness campaign

Published on

The U.S. Embassy in Bucharest launched a new awareness campaign this week to fight disinformation and boost media literacy, according to a press release sent Wednesday.

A series of new videos explores the negative impact false or misleading information can have on relationships and other elements of daily life.

The videos also offer a series of useful tips on how to recognize disinformation more easily, such as:

* Look out for sensationalist stories – Always examine stories in the media critically and go beyond the headline, as clickbait can often be deceiving.

* Check several sources – Look at multiple sources to establish whether what we’ve read in the media is an opinion, fake, or fact. Just because part of an article is true, doesn’t mean the whole thing is.

* Keep in mind that images, video, and audio can be altered – Be aware of AI manipulated images inserted in pictures and spot any inaccuracy, such as odd asymmetries or uneven textures.

* Look out for fake social media profiles – Watch-out if the accounts were recently created, if they post excessively but rarely comment or if they only have one profile picture which looks suspicious.

* Protect yourself, your friends and family – Don’t share information you’re not sure about.

According to the source, „the United States is deeply committed to promoting media literacy, a key goal it shares with the government of Romania, and Romanian citizens.”
