MEP Sosoaca complains to European Parliament that rule of law is not respected in Romania

Published on

MEP Diana Iovanovici Sosoaca on Monday evening complained in the European Parliament, during the procedure of one-minute speeches, after the Constitutional Court of Romania rejected her candidacy for the presidential election in Romania, that the ruling is abusive and that it was not taken on constitutional grounds.

„I want to bring to your attention an extremely serious case that has been happening for three days in Romania. I am the president of the SOS Romania party and according to real polls I am first in the voting intentions in the election of the Romanian president that will take place on November 24,” said Sosoaca.

„The Constitutional Court, for the first time in history, rejected my presidential bid, not on constitutional grounds, because all the forms were met, but for the fact that I fought against mandatory vaccination, because I fought against the muzzle during the pandemic, because I was fined by a policeman for speeding – although I am litigating that in court – because I made political statements in the Romanian Parliament as a senator, violating Article 72 of the Romanian Constitution and Articles 9 and 10 of the ECHR by which the political statements of a lawmaker have immunity. We cannot be convicted for this.

„I was not tried, I was not summoned, I did not have the right to defend myself and I was judged against newspaper articles,” she said.

She was just asking her fellow MEPs to take note that the rule of law is violated in Romania, but the chair of the sitting cut her microphone for having exceeded the speaking time.
