Motor vehicle registrations in Romania increased by 6% in the first nine months of 2024, year-on-year, as full electric vehicles took a plunge by 37%, according to data released on Tuesday at a press conference by Dan Vardie, chairman of the of the Association of Romania’s Motor Vehicle Manufacturers and Importers (APIA).

„In the first nine months of the year we witnessed an increase by 6% in registrations, which is very good compared to what is happening elsewhere in Europe and in the world. In commercial vehicles there is a jump of 27.5%. By engine types, 27,144 units were electrical vehicles, up 5.5%, nine months into 2024 as against the same period in 2023,” said Vardie.

Gasoline engines reported an increase of 1% year-on-year to 67,789 units, while diesel vehicles recorded 17,003 new units registered (+16.8%).

According to APIA, the strongest blow was the halving of the Rabla car scrappage programmes.

„It was a heavy blow. Whether we like it or not, whether the environment minister likes or not, halving the Rabla programme had an undesirable effect and it is not a coincidence at all.”

The Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers and Importers is a non-profit organization, founded in 1994, a member of the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, since 1996.
