Published on

Romania ranks third among European Union (EU) member states in Central and Eastern Europe in terms of the value of e-commerce, after Poland and the Czech Republic, according to the „European Ecommerce 2024” report, quoted by the Romanian Association of Online Shops (ARMO) in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Friday.

According to the document, in 2023, the Romanian e-commerce of goods and services reached the value of EUR 10.6 billion, equivalent to 3.32% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), up from 3.17% of GDP in the previous year.

„This development underlines the resilience and adaptability of the Romanian ecommerce sector, which has become a main pillar of the digital economy. There is significant potential for a significant expansion in the adoption of online shopping, with 50% of the population making at least one online purchase in 2023. This statistics report indicates major opportunities for the development of the e-commerce sector, attracting the interest of more and more companies, both local and international,” ARMO representatives maintain.

For 2024, the report estimates that online sales of goods and services will grow 10% to EUR 11.7 billion (3.42% of GDP). It is also expected that the percentage of the population shopping online will reach 55%, reflecting the digitisation trend and the growing preference of Romanian consumers for online commerce.

The European Ecommerce 2024 report was commissioned by Ecommerce Europe and EuroCommerce, and made by the Centre for Market Insights of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
