Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis will travel to Brussels to participate on Wednesday in a EU-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit and a European Council meeting scheduled for October 17 and 18, according to the Romanian Presidential Administration.

Featuring on the agenda of the European Council meeting are Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, EU competitiveness, migration, foreign affairs, as well as the Republic of Moldova.

The European leaders will discuss the latest developments in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, as well as continued comprehensive support for Ukraine and its people.

As for the Middle East, the „alarming” situation and the „risks of escalation of violence in the region” will be discussed. During the meeting, the calls for the cessation of hostilities and the observance of international rules, including in the field of humanitarian law, will be reiterated.

The European Council will also review the progress made with strengthening the EU’s competitiveness, economic resilience and the single market.

„At Romania’s proposal, the agenda of the meeting will also include discussions on the situation in the Republic of Moldova, as well as on support for accession to the European Union, especially for supporting internal reforms and strengthening resilience and stability. In view of the upcoming elections and the referendum on the European integration of the Republic of Moldova, the issue of Russian interference in the electoral process will also be discussed.”

Migration is another important topic on the agenda of European leaders, who will take stock of the implementation of the comprehensive approach on migration, which they agreed on at the special European Council meeting on February 9, 2023.

On Wednesday, ahead of the European Council meeting, the first EU – Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will be organised, aimed at strengthening the political and economic partnership between the European Union and the GCC member states in a difficult geopolitical context.
