81 cases of West Nile virus infection, since June 3, with 17 deaths

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) informed that since the beginning of the West Nile virus infection surveillance period, June 3, and until Thursday, 81 cases of West Nile virus infection have been registered, of which 71 confirmed and 10 probable.

According to INSP, 17 deaths were recorded as a result of West Nile virus infection: Bihor county (1), Botosani (2), Braila (1), Giurgiu (1), Iasi (1), Mures (2), Salaj (1) ), Suceava (3), Timis (1), Vrancea (1) and Bucharest (3).

The most cases of illness – 25 – were registered in the 70-79 age group and 23 in people aged between 60 and 69, the INSP informed.

The INSP makes a series of recommendations for the population – to avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothes and long pants, to use chemical repellents for mosquitoes, to prevent insects from entering the house through protective nets on the windows, to ensure the drying of puddles around the household, as well as removing containers of stagnant water and household garbage.
