President Iohannis: Romania will continue to give the nursing profession the importance it deserves

Published on

Romania will continue to give the nursing profession the importance it deserves both nationally and internationally, because only through a „major” involvement of decision-makers, they will be able to respond to the call to protect the health and well-being of citizens, President Klaus Iohannis emphasised in a message delivered on the 125th anniversary of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and presented by presidential advisor Diana Paun.

„I welcome all participants to this event which celebrates a significant moment in global advocacy for the nursing profession. Your presence here underlines both the devotion to the profession and the spirit of international solidarity in the face of common health challenges. This special event that Romania is hosting is an opportunity to highlight the vital importance of the nursing profession to global health, as a framework for the exchange of experiences and best practices among health professionals,” the message reads.

Iohannis mentioned that, during his term as president, he has constantly appreciated the devotion of Romanian nurses, awarding them on numerous occasions the ‘Sanitary Merit’ Order as a sign of recognition for their valuable contribution to the health of citizens, especially during the critical moments of the COVID-19 pandemic, when they were on the front line.

The head of state mentioned the humanitarian interventions of Romanian nurses at international level, which reflect their dedication and professionalism.

„The High Patronage granted to this event confirms once again our appreciation for the values in the service of which you work. These are difficult times, marked by conflict and climate change, which are putting increasing pressure on health systems. It is therefore essential to continuously invest in the health workforce. We must ensure that nurses benefit from adequate conditions, continuing medical education and protection of their professional dignity,” the president added.

According to him, „the dedication, empathy and passion of nurses are admirable and go far above the call of duty, but beyond this extraordinary resilience, it is essential that the authorities actively support the sustainable development of this profession, ensuring everything necessary to provide the highest quality of care.”

„It is our responsibility to honour these efforts and support the transformation of the health system to give health professionals the help they need. Romania will continue to give the nursing profession the importance it deserves, both nationally and internationally. Only through a greater involvement of decision-makers will nurses be able to answer the call to protect the health and well-being of our citizens. On this anniversary, I congratulate you for your tireless work and dedication. I wish you good health and strength to continue to fulfill this noble mission, to care for our health,” Iohannis highlighted.
