Gov’t to earmark over RON 780 million for student dormitories, cafeterias, digital transformation in universities

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced that at its meeting today, the Romanian government will approve RON 780 million for public education spending.

The money is a first tranche for the construction or rehabilitation of student dormitories and cafeterias and to accelerate digital transformation in universities, Ciolacu said at the beginning of the government meeting.

„I have argued that we need to make the construction of student dormitories a national priority. We are starting to prove that concretely. Today we are earmarking additional funds for education, over RON 780 million. It is a first tranche of money for the construction or rehabilitation of student dormitories and cafeterias and to boost digital transformation in universities,” Ciolacu said.

On October 14, Ciolacu said that the priorities of the National Investment Corporation are projects developed on university campuses.

He added that investment planned for the countryside, such as cultural centres or sports halls can wait a few more months.

„The priorities of the National Investment Corporation at the moment are university campuses. I want to apologise to the mayors or to certain mayors. My opinion is that certain cultural centres, certain sports halls in the rural area can still wait for some more months. All university campuses, student dormitories will be a priority for the National Investment Corporation at this time,” said Ciolacu.

He added that there is coordination with the education minister on projects related to the construction of new dormitories for students.
