Romanian lawmaker Bulai to lead PACE delegation to monitor parliamentary elections in Georgia

Published on

Save Romania Union (USR) MP Iulian Bulai will lead a delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) to monitor the parliamentary elections in Georgia, scheduled for October 26.

He says that the PACE delegation consists of 40 members and will be accompanied by legal experts from the Venice Commission.

In September, Bulai and a small team participated in a pre-electoral mission in that country.

„Our delegation noted that the polarisation of the political landscape had reached unprecedented levels, turning the parliamentary elections into a de facto referendum on Georgia’s democratic trajectory and European path. There are concerns about the repression of demonstrations and public demonstrations, which are fully legitimate in a democratic society. One of our recommendations was to increase pluralism in the Georgian Parliament and avoid super-majorities, in order to strengthen the democratic system,” the USR MP told AGERPRES on Thursday.

Before these parliamentary elections, the electoral law in Georgia was amended to get rid of gender quota.

On election day, the PACE mission will monitor the opening of polling stations, voting, counting votes and determining the results of the elections.
