Number of building permits issued for residential buildings up 3.3% in first nine months

The number of building permits issued for residential buildings in the first nine months of the year was up by 3.3% compared to the same period last year, while in September it showed an increase of 3.9% compared to August and 13.2% compared to September 2023, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (NIS), sent to AGERPRES on Thursday.

Thus, 27,262 building permits for residential buildings were issued between January 1 and September 30. Increases were recorded in the following development regions: South – Muntenia (+336 permits), West (+273), North – East (+140), North – West (+105), Bucharest – Ilfov (+92), South – West Oltenia (+47) and South – East (+9). The decrease was registered in the Center development region (-134 permits).

In September 2024, 3,490 building permits were issued for residential buildings (+3.9% compared to August 2024), with a total usable floor area of 693,201 square meters (-14.2%). 72.8% of the total building permits for residential buildings are for rural areas.

According to INS data, in September 2024 there was an increase of 130 in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings compared to the previous month. In territorial profile, this increase is reflected in the following development regions: West (+108 authorizations), Center (+59) and North – West (+58). Decreases were recorded in the following development regions: North – East (-46 permits), South – West Oltenia (-23), Bucharest – Ilfov (-13), South – Muntenia (-9) and South – East (-4).

As for non-residential buildings, 568 building permits were issued in September (+6.6% compared to August 2024), with a total usable floor area of 256,865 sq.m (+43.0%).

Compared to the previous month, there was an increase in the usable floor area of building permits issued for non-residential buildings (+77,180 sqm). By territorial profile, this increase is reflected in the following development regions: South-Muntenia (+32.793 sq.m.), South-East (+30.533), West (+12.261), South-West Oltenia (+6.911) and Center (+1.697). Decreases were registered in the following development regions: North – West (-3.914 sq.m.), Bucharest – Ilfov (-2.943) and North – East (-158).

Compared to September 2023, in September 2024 there was an increase both in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings (+13.2%) and in the total usable floor area (+10.6%).

In terms of territorial profile, this increase in the number of building permits issued for residential buildings (+407 permits) is reflected in the following development regions: North – West (+136 permits), Center (+109), South-Muntenia (+72), West (+71), North-East (+61) and South-East (+20). Decreases were recorded in the development regions Bucharest-Ilfov (-45 authorizations) and South-West Oltenia (-17).

Also, in September 2024, compared to the same month in 2023, there was an increase in both the number of building permits issued for non-residential buildings (+2%) and the total usable floor area (+2.8%).

In territorial profile, this increase in the usable surface area of building permits issued for non-residential buildings (+6.878 sq.m) is reflected in the following development regions: South-East (+20.089 sq.m), South-Muntenia (+15.835 sq.m), Bucharest-Ilfov (+12.595 sq.m), South-West Oltenia (+10.898 sq.m) and North-East (+1.122 sq.m). Decreases were recorded in the following development regions: Center (-2.5301 sq.m.), West (-19.565) and North – West (-8.795).
