4.7% increase in number of birth certificates in September, natural growth remains negative (statistics)

The number of birth certificates increased by 4.7%, in September of this year, compared to the similar period in 2023, but the natural increase of the population remained negative, at minus 4,432 people, shows the data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to the cited source, in the analyzed period, the number of death certificates increased by 819 (+4.6%), and the one for children under the age of one who died was 25 higher.

The natural increase was negative both in September 2024 (-4,432 people) and in September 2023 (minus 4,250 people).

INS data reveal the fact that, in the first autumn month of this year, the death of 9,458 people (4,912 male and 4,546 female) was recorded in the urban environment, and the death of 9,159 people (4,899 men and 4,260 women). Thus, compared to the same month in 2023, the number of registered deaths increased by 3.1% in urban areas and by 6.2% in rural areas.

Most deaths, 41.4% (7,699 deaths), were recorded in people aged 80 and over, 26% in people between 70 and 79 years old, and 17.2% in people aged 60- 69 years old. At the opposite pole, the fewest deaths were recorded in the age groups 0-4 years (110 deaths), 5-19 years (39 deaths) and 20-29 years (96 deaths).

On the other hand, the number of birth certificates for live births, registered in September 2024, was higher by 637 (+4.7%), compared to the same month of the previous year. Compared to August of the current year, in September 2024 birth certificates were registered for 14,185 children, down by 213 (-1.5%).

According to official statistics, in September of this year, 11,476 marriages were registered at civil status offices. At the same time, the number of divorces pronounced by final court decisions and by the agreement of the spouses (administratively or by notarial procedure) was 1,813.

Between January 2023 and September 2024, the highest number of marriages was recorded in August 2023 (17,414), and the lowest in January 2024 (3,700).
