National Defence Ministry warns about online disinformation on military equipment movements

Published on

The National Defence Ministry (MApN) warns on Sunday regarding disinformation circulating online, especially on the TikTok platform. Various recordings of military equipment movements, filmed in previous days, are being falsely presented as occurring on December 7.

„For example, the images captured in the first video in Bucharest were filmed on the morning of December 1 and show the movement of military vehicles from the Romanian Army and allied forces that were part of the parade block. The tanks and armored vehicles in the video were heading toward Piata Presei Libere [Free Press Square] to form the parade line that passed under the Arch of Triumph during the National Military Parade,” the MApN said in a press release.

Additionally, other widely circulated images on TikTok show footage filmed some time ago, similarly presented as occurring on Sunday.

„Another recurring theme, also seen today on digital platforms, including in podcast-style shows, involves alleged imminent preparations by the National Defence Ministry to recruit young people aged 18 to 35 or mobilise reservists for deployment to the front in Ukraine. All of this information is false!,” the ministry stresses in the press release.

The MApN further said that these manipulations spread on digital networks, such as TikTok, „including as part of campaigns supported by state actors with agendas contrary to Romania’s sovereignty and NATO,” aim to maintain uncertainty and create panic among the public.
