Natural population growth remains negative in October

The number of birth certificates decreased 5.4% in October this year compared to the previous month, with 13,418 children being registered, and the natural population growth remained negative, as the number of deaths recorded was 1.5 times higher than the number of live births, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Tuesday.

„In October 2024, 13,418 birth certificates were registered, a decrease of 767 (-5.4%) compared to September 2024. The number of death certificates recorded in October 2024 was 20,454 (10,745 for males and 9,709 for females), an increase of 1,837 deaths compared to September 2024, representing a 9.9% increase (+9.5% for men and +10.3% for women). The number of death certificates recorded for children under 1 year of age in October 2024 was 84, a decrease of 3 compared to September 2024. The natural population growth remained negative (-7,036) in October 2024, as the number of deaths recorded was 1.5 times higher than the number of live births,” the press release from the National Institute of Statistics reads.

On the other hand, compared to the same month in 2023, the number of birth certificates for live births registered in October 2024 was higher by 1,566 (+13.2%), while the number of death certificates decreased by 23 (-0.1%). In October of the previous year, the natural population growth was also negative, at -8,625 people.

In October 2024, in urban areas, 10,201 deaths were recorded (5,306 men and 4,895 women), while in rural areas, 10,253 deaths were recorded (5,439 men and 4,814 women). Compared to the same month in 2023, the number of deaths in urban areas increased 0.6% (a -0.2% decrease for men and a +1.5% increase for women), while in rural areas, the number of deaths dropped 0.9% (-0.7% for men and -1% for women).

A percentage of 41.3% (8,441 deaths) of the total number of deaths were registered among people aged 80 and over, 26.2% (5,354 deaths) among people aged 70-79, and 17.7% (3,627 deaths) among people aged 60-69. Conversely, the fewest deaths were registered in the age groups 0-4 years (104 deaths), 5-19 years (45 deaths), and 20-29 years (86 deaths).

In October 2024, 6,183 marriages were registered at civil status offices, and the number of divorces pronounced under final court decisions or by mutual consent of the spouses (either administratively or through a notarial procedure) was 1,797.
