Pro-European parties announce common governance programme, support for possible common candidate for president

Published on

The pro-European parties – Social Democratic Party (PSD), National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), and the Parliamentary Group of National Minorities – announced on Tuesday evening, at the end of the first round of political consultations, their commitment to a common governance programme and the support for a possible common candidate for the presidential elections.

„Today, the pro-European formations PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR, and the Parliamentary Group of National Minorities announce their firm commitment to forming a pro-European majority in the Romanian Parliament, a pro-European government, and supporting a possible pro-European common candidate for the presidential elections,” a press release sent by the participating formations in the consultations reads.

According to the quoted source, during the first meeting organised following the signing of the joint Resolution last week, several essential priorities were discussed: starting the dialogue for the rapid formation of a pro-European government and increasing the current pace of investments and reforms from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

„In the coming days, the four parties and the representatives of the national minorities will work on a common governance programme, based on development and reforms, which will consider the priorities of the citizens of Romania. Thus, the parties agreed to establish a Joint Committee for the development of the government programme and working groups on various activity domains. We agreed that a concrete plan is necessary to streamline and reduce public spending and bureaucracy in public administration. (…) The current moment is decisive for Romania. A profound change is needed, and the pro-European parties are taking on this responsibility. The pro-European parties are committed to increasing trust in institutions and in the political class through good governance, transparency in public spending, and respect for the citizens,” the press release concludes.
