The German Embassy in Bucharest is organizing, on Monday, a series of festivities to mark the Day of German Unity, under the motto „30 years of Romanian-German friendship and partnership in Europe”, according to Agerpres.
The event, which marks the reunification of Germany on October 3, 1990, following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War, will be attended by President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca.
For us Germans, this reunification represents a historic opportunity, which would not have been possible without our close partners and friends in Europe and the United States of America. Brave women and men from the then GDR and from many countries in Eastern Europe, including here in Romania, contributed decisively to the fall of the Iron Curtain. We owe them our gratitude, said Ambassador Peer Gebauer, according to a press release sent by the diplomatic mission.
The Embassy also reminded that 2022 is also the anniversary of the Romanian-German Friendship Treaty of April 21, 1992, which still represents the foundation of close political, economic and cultural cooperation in a united Europe.
I am glad that we managed to celebrate this anniversary year of friendship through a series of high-level political visits. The visit of the Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on May 4, 2022 was of course the highlight, but also the visit of the President of the Bundesrat Bodo Ramelow, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Annalena Baerbock, and numerous other ministers and parliamentarians highlighted how close our partnership has become and how much we value Romania as an important partner in the European Union and within NATO. This is all the more important after February 24, 2022: Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, in violation of the provisions of international law, marks a turning point in the history of Europe, Peer Gebauer added.
The German Embassy „firmly” condemned this „flagrant” violation of international legal order.
Russia must not win this war. Therefore, we will continue to support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, together with our partners from the European Union, NATO and the international community, as much as it will be necessary. In these difficult times we must be in solidarity in Europe and not let ourselves be divided by Russia. I especially thank Romania for its remarkable support given to refugees from Ukraine and for its constructive role in Europe, in the military consolidation of NATO’s Eastern Flank and in the coordination of humanitarian convoys for Ukraine, as well as for the joint support given to the Republic of Moldova, said Gebauer.
According to him, the Romanian-German partnership includes much more than the political sphere, especially the „excellent” economic relations. Germany is Romania’s most important commercial partner, where more than 7,500 German companies are successfully operating, providing added value and qualified jobs, the ambassador added.
He also mentioned the close social and cultural ties, an essential role in this regard belonging to the German minority in Romania, as well as to the increasing number of Romanian citizens in Germany, who represent an important bridge between societies.
