President Klaus Iohannis: The last thing Romania needs is an extended government and parliamentary crisis

Published on

The last thing Romania needs is an extended government and parliamentary crisis, President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday.

He pointed out that Romania is „in a very complicated situation” and called on all political leaders that „this is not the time for petty quarrels.”

Furthermore, Klaus Iohannis drew attention to the fact that the current Executive is, during this period, interim.

The statement was made in the context in which Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced on Thursday that the Social Democratic Party (PSD) is withdrawing from the discussions for the formation of the Executive and will vote in Parliament for a right-wing government.

„Romania is in a very complicated situation. We have a war at the border, we have hybrid attacks against Romania, which led to the cancellation of the presidential elections, an unprecedented situation, we have a very complicated situation in the European Union, where the states considered the engines of the Union are facing internal problems regarding government formation, early elections, and others. And the last thing, I repeat, the last thing Romania needs is an extended governmental and parliamentary crisis. Such a thing must be avoided at all costs,” said the head of state.

He spoke of „some public statements made in the last few hours” and addressed all political leaders and parties that will enter Parliament.

„This is not the time for petty quarrels. It is the moment for each leader to see themselves as a statesman, to sit at the negotiating table, to have a government as soon as possible, a government that starts creating the budget for next year, that starts organising the presidential elections in the first part of next year,” the head of state stressed.

He also said that the current Executive has limited powers.

„According to the Constitution, after the parliamentary elections are validated, the government becomes interim and deals only with current affairs. Therefore, the current government cannot issue emergency ordinances nor present a budget that can be voted in Parliament. Practically, the things that are extremely important during this period must be done by the new government,” explained Iohannis.

Iohannis repeated his call for understanding between politicians at this time.

„It is important to put aside all petty quarrels, all disagreements coming from a closer or more distant past, and to focus on what is important – Romania is important, Romanian citizens are important, and not the petty quarrels between politicians and parties. I ask that we quickly get past any divergences and start building for Romania and for Romanians,” the president said.
