German Ambassador Gebauer: We encourage our Romanian friends to advance, eagerly, in terms of reforms in the field of Justice

The German ambassador in Bucharest, Peer Gebauer, said on Monday that his country encourages Romania to „advance, with ambition, in terms of reforms in the field of Justice” and recalled the support granted for Romania to join the Schengen Area, according to Agerpres.

We see and recognize Romania’s efforts related to concluding the CVM and becoming a full member of Schengen. As the rule of law and the fight against corruption are key elements in these areas, we appreciate the important steps that the Government has already taken and we encourage our Romanian friends to advance, with ambition, in terms of reforms in the field of Justice. In terms of Schengen, you all know the clear message of our chancellor, Olaf Scholz, recently transmitted, when he said that he will make efforts for Romania to become a full member of Schengen, the diplomat said, at the event organized on the occasion of the German Unity Day.

The ambassador also spoke about the current security situation and the cooperation between Germany and Romania.

Politically, we will get even closer, especially in terms of security in the Black Sea region. Economically, we have huge potential for in-depth cooperation in many fields, he said.

Peer Gebauer assessed that „Russia’s brutal and illegal aggression against Ukraine is a turning point in history”.

I would like to convey my deep respect for the courageous defense struggle of the Ukrainian people, which opposes Russian aggression. Let me be clear: it is our obligation to continue to support Ukraine with all we can, with all the means we have and that as long as it takes, the German ambassador said.

He expressed his gratitude to Romania’s efforts to support Ukraine, whether it was the transportation of grain, political support or hosting citizens from the neighboring country who fled the war.
