Calin Georgescu says he was asked to participate in Trump’s inauguration, but he refused

Calin Georgescu says that he was asked to participate in the inauguration ceremony of American President Donald Trump, but he refused „for very clear reasons”.

Present on Thursday at the Supreme Court, Georgescu was asked by journalists whether he was invited to the U.S. to participate on January 20 in the inauguration ceremony of President Donald Trump.

„I was asked to go, but I refused, for very clear reasons”, answered Calin Georgescu.

The Ambassador of Romania to the U.S., Andrei Muraru, recently stated that „Mr. Calin Georgescu was not invited to the inauguration ceremony, his name is not among the persons officially invited by the Inauguration Committee and by the U.S. State Department”.

Calin Georgescu participated on Thursday in the lawsuit at the High Court of Cassation and Justice in which he challenges the annulment of the presidential elections.

„The evidence does not exist on the part of those who abusively annulled the will of the people and, by way of consequence, what I can say today is that human rights, the right to choose and the right to be chosen, are guaranteed, they cannot be judged. The moment you judge human rights, it is like violating any kind of creation and I believe that is the idea of what is happening today. It is an action and a fight against God, it is a fight against the right of the Romanian people and against the most basic right to freedom – the free vote. Basically, we judge that we voted freely. This is the essence. The High Court will remain in deliberation and we will probably know the result tomorrow”, said Georgescu, upon leaving the court.

Asked whether he would be allowed to run again in the presidential elections, Georgescu reiterated that the authorities had no evidence to cancel the elections.

Calin Georgescu and the Coalition for the Defense of the Rule of Law sued the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) and several institutions (the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff of the Defense, the Government, the General Prosecutor’s Office, the Constitutional Court, the Romanian Intelligence Service), but also the president Klaus Iohannis and Elena Lasconi, the president of USR, requesting the annulment of two decisions of the BEC by which it was decided the resumption of the presidential elections from scratch, based on the decision of the Constitutional Court.

On December 31, 2024, the Bucharest Court of Appeal rejected the action brought by Calin Georgescu, but he appealed.

On December 6, 2024, the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of the presidential elections, won by Calin Georgescu, based on documents declassified by the Supreme Council for Country’s Defense.
