Crin Antonescu is joint candidate of PSD, PNL, UDMR and minorities in presidential elections (PM Ciolacu)

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu declared on Thursday that it is ”very unlikely” for PSD to have another candidate than Crin Antonescu in the presidential elections, since this was decided in the governing coalition, and he signed an agreement to this effect.

The Prime Minister was asked how he comments on the fact that there are voices in PSD, including former MP Radu Cristescu, which contest Crin Antonescu’s candidacy and which say that Victor Ponta would be more suitable.

„Very well. It is his right. Is he a leader? It is a decision of the party, we have a congress. From my point of view, I have a signature on a coalition agreement. We have a governing coalition where it is specified that Mr. Crin Antonescu is the common candidate of the PSD, PNL, UDMR and minorities. At this moment, if Mr. Antonescu is not the candidate, which it is very unlikely, especially after today’s meeting of the PSD National Political Council, it means that we no longer have a governing coalition”, Ciolacu said at the PSD headquarters, after the meeting of the party’s National Political Council.

He specified that if Victor Ponta wishes to enter the presidential race, he will not run as a member of the PSD.

Asked whether Ponta is not defying the PSD by wanting to run, Ciolacu replied: „He is not defying anyone. Mr. Ponta is a politician, a former prime minister, a former president of the party. Did Mr. Geoana defy when he ran?”
