Over 100 buildings in Romania to light up in red for European 112 Day

Published on

Over 100 offices of public bodies and privately-run companies in Romania will light up in red today to celebrate European 112 Day.

„The Special Telecommunications Service (STS) has invited this year public bodies and private organisations in Romania to join the awareness campaign of responsible calling the emergency number 112. Thus, on Tuesday, February 11, European 112 Day, over 100 offices of public bodies, financial and cultural establishments, tourist attractions and buildings of privately-run companies in Bucharest and in 30 counties in Romania will light up in red be illuminated in red signifying the importance and necessity of the correct use of this vital service dedicated to citizens.” according to STS.

Through this symbolic visual approach, STS says that it wants to draw attention to the „essential” role of the single emergency number and to encourage the public to use it responsibly.

„Abusive calling of 112 can jeopardise the rapid intervention of specialised crews where it is really needed,” according to STS.

In 2024, as a result of the efforts of the Special Telecommunications Service together with the first responders – Police, ISU-SMURD, Ambulance, Gendarmerie and Mountain Rescue- and also together with government partners and private telecommunications operators, the number of non-emergency calls decreased by almost one million compared to previous years.

The STS operators of the 112 Emergency Service took over 9,763,443 calls, of which 60.45% were emergencies. However, over 3.8 million calls did not require the intervention of first responders – Ambulance, Police, ISU-SMURD, Gendarmerie or Mountain Rescue.
