MEP Buda: Further support for Ukraine, essential for strengthening EU

Published on

Further support for Ukraine is an essential element for strengthening the EU bloc and maintaining peace and stability both at the European and global levels, Romanian MEP Daniel Buda (EPP) highlighted at a meeting with a group of Romanian journalists on Tuesday evening.

„That is precisely why the European Commission is coming up with appropriate forms of support for all that means revenue losses,” explained Daniel Buda, who is also Vice-President of the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI).

Regarding the support for Ukrainian refugees, he mentioned that approximately 135,000 people remained in Romania, most of whom women and children. The expenses made by the country for these refugees were compensated with European funds.

„Romania has been helped to recover these amounts. It advanced these expenses as a member state, and then, based on the reimbursements and the documents submitted in this regard, we were able to recover the financial resources we had spent,” he said.

On the other hand, Daniel Buda had a discussion with European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms Raffaele Fitto, during which he stressed the need to support the infrastructure of EU regions near the Ukrainian border. The European Parliament will have a debate on this topic on Wednesday.

„I explained the necessity of continuing to support the infrastructure of EU member states near the Ukrainian border, so that it can be rebuilt and consolidated. In this regard, the EU has provided financial resources – over 25 million euro have been allocated just in the first stage for the Port of Constanta,” said the MEP.

According to him, about 70% of the grain exported from Ukraine to other parts of the world has passed through Romania. In this regard, Romania has played an important role, including in preventing migration, since „migration phenomena are primarily generated by famine.”
