Non-residents’ direct investments in Romania down by over 1 billion EUR in 2024

Direct investments by non-residents in Romania fell by more than one billion EUR last year, to 5.730 billion EUR, from 6.748 billion EUR in 2023, according to data published by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) on Thursday.

Equity participations (including estimated reinvested profit) totaled a net 4.650 billion EUR, while intra-group loans registered a net 1.080 billion EUR.

A total of 6,084 companies with foreign capital were established in Romania in 2024, down by 13.21% compared to the previous year, according to data centralized by the National Trade Register Office (ONRC), consulted by AGERPRES.

The 6,084 new companies had a total subscribed share capital of almost 18.407 million USD, down 85.35% compared to the subscribed capital of companies registered in 2023, which totaled 125.664 million USD.

In December 2024, 496 companies running on foreign capital were registered in December 2024 (-11.9% compared to the same month in 2023), with a subscribed capital of 529,700 USD (-76.29%).

By industry, most registrations were recorded in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (30.04%), professional, administrative, scientific and technical activities (17.54%) and transportation, storage and communication (17.54%).

At the end of December 2024, there were 290,930 companies in Romania running on foreign capital. The subscribed capital amounted to 74,208 billion USD.

The highest number of companies with foreign participation was with Italian investors, 53,743 (subscribed capital of 3.641 billion USD), but the highest value of the share capital belonged to Dutch companies, 13.231 billion USD, in 6,221 companies.
