Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Emil Hurezeanu, present at the Munich Security Conference, had meetings on Saturday with U.S. Senators Jane Shaheen, James Risch, and Christopher A. Coons. The discussions also addressed foreign interference in Romania’s presidential election last year and the preparation of measures to prevent the repetition of foreign meddling, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).

According to a MAE press release sent to AGERPRES on Sunday, the main topics of the discussions were the security situation in the Black Sea region, as well as ways to leverage the Romania-U.S. Strategic Partnership to strengthen cooperation in the economic sector, with a focus on the energy component, continued support for Ukraine, and involvement in the reconstruction process.

The Romanian official emphasised, in this context, the importance of strengthening defence and deterrence on the Eastern Flank, including through the continued robust U.S. presence in Romania.

Also on Saturday, Emil Hurezeanu attended a meeting organised by British Foreign Minister David Lammy and Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani on combating illegal migration.

In this context, the head of Romania’s diplomacy confirmed the constant attention that our country gives to the evolution of migrant flows and emphasised that managing the external dimension of migration, which involves cooperation with origin and transit countries, is a key factor in reducing illegal migration, by addressing the root causes of migration, combating migrant smuggling networks, and promoting legal migration.

Emil Hurezeanu also participated in a discussion dedicated to the perspectives on the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine, organised by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation and Yalta European Strategy. The discussions highlighted the necessity of a just and lasting peace, based on the UN Charter and principles of international law, as well as solid and credible guarantees for Ukraine, according to the MAE.
