Justice Minister Radu Marinescu met on Tuesday with Ambassador of Japan to Romania Takashi Katae, in which context they discussed, among other topics, finding better solutions for judicial cooperation regarding Romanian citizens in prisons in Japan.

According to a press release the Ministry of Justice (MJ) sent to AGERPRES, the agenda of the meeting between the two officials included issues of mutual interest regarding strengthening judicial cooperation between the two states.

Additionally, the quoted source mentions that specific cases of Romanian citizens in Japanese prisons were discussed, seeking the best solutions for judicial cooperation regarding their situation.

According to the release, Radu Marinescu praised the excellent judicial cooperation between the two states, reaffirming Romania’s firm commitment to developing strong interinstitutional collaboration in the future.

The bilateral relations between Romania and Japan were upgraded to the privileged level of a strategic partnership on March 7, 2023, through the signing of the Joint Declaration Establishing the Strategic Partnership between Romania and Japan, according to the Ministry of Justice.

The Ministry also mentions that last year, the Declaration of Cooperation between the Ministry of Justice of Romania and the Ministry of Justice of Japan in the field of law and justice was signed.

„Thus, Romania became the first European Union country to sign such a Declaration with Japan, a document that aims, among other things, to develop cooperation between the two states and exchange experiences in international law,” the press release also reads.
