Holy See ambassador: Unprecedented situations occurred in Romania’s history in relation with elections

Published on

Ambassador of the Holy See in Bucharest, Monsignor Giampiero Gloder – the dean of the diplomatic corps accredited to Romania – declared on Tuesday that elections represent a fundamental moment in any democratic system, and that „unprecedented situations” have occurred in Romania’s recent history that require a special commitment to transparency and responsibility for the good of all Romanian citizens.

In the past year, Romania has continued its development path that has characterized its recent history through progressive modernization and through the country’s integration into the European context, of which the full Schengen admission was definitely a particularly significant and positive step. Let this evolution continue with policies focused on stability and the gainful growth of the nation. The year we have ended was also marked by local, European, parliamentary and presidential elections. Elections are for sure a fundamental moment in any democratic system. We cannot deny that unprecedented situations have occurred in the country’s history that require a special commitment to transparency and responsibility for the good of all Romanian citizens, the ambassador declared at the meeting at the Cotroceni Palace of acting President Ilie Bolojan with the heads of the diplomatic missions accredited to Romania.

Monsignor Giampiero Gloder wished the acting president that the year 2025 brings about a farsighted approach to the challenges that arise with the consolidation and stabilization of the country’s democratic institutions, and the further development of economic and social policies aimed at increasing the well-being of all citizens of the nation.

The countries and institutions we represent, Mr. President, assure you of their availability to continue dialogue and cooperation, and while we thank you for this meeting here, at Cotroceni, we ask you to convey to the entire beloved people of Romania our wishes for harmony, prosperity and peace for the future of the nation, said the Holy See’s ambassador to Romania.

He also thanked the Romanian state authorities for the support shown in collaborating with the countries and institutions represented by the heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Romania, referencing the situation during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, an experience that has highlighted the lights and shadows in the relations between nations, as he put it. Lights of cooperation and solidarity that appeared in order to face an unprecedented phenomenon, and shadows because distrust, individualism and selfishness also arose, Monsignor Giampiero Gloder concluded.
