USR’s Lasconi: Russia has come to openly and officially support Calin Georgescu

National leader of the Save Romania Union (USR) Elena Lasconi says that Russia has come to support „openly and officially” the former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu.

The clarifications come after the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed on Tuesday in a press statement carried by Russia’s TASS news agency that the European Union’s leadership is obviously behind the decision to bring charges against Georgescu.

„Russia has come to openly and officially support Calin Georgescu. The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, in an unprecedented gesture, issued a press statement accusing the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, of having asked the authorities in Bucharest to prevent Calin Georgescu from running in the presidential election in May. The statement contains all the themes promoted by Calin Georgescu and the isolationist parties – globalism, Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission and Donald Trump. What it fails to do- same as in the speeches of Georgescu and the isolationist parties – is providing backing evidence in support of the accusations,” Lasconi said in a social media post.

She voiced hope that the Romanian Foreign Ministry has summoned the ambassador of the Russian Federation for explanations and „especially to tell him that Romania is not the playground” of the Russian spy services.

„It should now be clear to everyone who and what is behind Calin Georgescu, who is stirring up hatred, who wants to divide us, and especially who gains from our division. I hope that our Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already called the ambassador of the Russian Federation for explanations and especially to tell him that Romania is not the playground of the Russian spy services. And maybe it’s a good time for some Russian diplomats in Bucharest who are not really diplomats to go back to Moscow with the status of ‘persona non grata’ in Romania,” Lasconi added.

According to SVR, Brussels is waging a war on those European leaders who openly support US President Donald Trump.

„European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who played a key role in recognising the results of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania as invalid, called on the current authorities in Bucharest to bar Georgescu from participating in the second round in May. She warned that if this representative of ‘non-systemic forces’ continues his election campaign, the European Union will restrict access to its funds for Romania,” SVR said without offering proof.
