Ilie Bolojan will attend, on Thursday, the first European Council meeting as the interim president of Romania.
At this special summit, the heads of state and government from the European Union will discuss support for Ukraine and the situation of European defence.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is invited to participate in the meeting.
Bolojan will start the day with a meeting with president of the European People’s Party Manfred Weber, and in the morning he will attend the European People’s Party Summit.
At noon, the interim head of state will participate in the discussions at the special European Council meeting.
Representatives of parliamentary parties were welcomed, a week ago, at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace by the interim president, who convened consultations during which they presented their strategies on the most important foreign policy issues.
These meetings took place before Bolojan’s participation in the European Council meeting in Brussels and focused mainly on Romania’s response to current security challenges.
Most parties rejected the scenario of sending peacekeeping troops from Romania in the event of a cessation of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.
Interim President Ilie Bolojan said at the end of last week that, during the consultations at Cotroceni with parliamentary parties and formations, the participants expressed, in principle, Romania’s willingness to continue supporting Ukraine.
„As for support for Ukraine, during the consultations, we expressed, in principle, Romania’s willingness to continue supporting this country, because it is not just about supporting the victim in front of the aggressor, which is a matter of principle, but, in fact, it is support for the security of our country, because if these Russian approaches continue in the future, and we know what history has been like in this part of the world, Ukraine could only be the first victim,” Bolojan told a press conference.
