The leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), George Simion, came to the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) on Friday, stating that he supports Calin Georgescu in filing his candidacy for the presidential election and maintains his decision not to run in the electoral race.
„I will not run. I keep my word. It is Mr. Tarziu’s personal choice [to criticize Georgescu], he does not represent the party. In the AUR leadership forums, the decision to support Mr. Georgescu was unanimously taken”, declared Simion.
„I have been very amused these days by all sorts of nonsense, I liked the one with the Russians preparing the coup d’état the most. Let’s be serious. No one is leaving the EU and NATO”, said the AUR president.
Asked about possible challenges to Georgescu’s candidacy, he replied: „There certainly will be, there are many enemies of democracy and the Constitutional Court has created a dangerous precedent that it must not repeat.”
According to the AUR leader, there is no reason in the country’s laws, in the Constitution, for Georgescu to be invalidated.
Calin Georgescu is to file his candidacy as an independent in the presidential elections. In front of the BEC headquarters, several supporters are present, with flags and placards with Georgescu’s picture. They chanted the candidate’s name, as well as „Liberty”, „We are not leaving”, „Round 2”, „We want peace, not war”.
